The “Gauntlet”
The Mephisto Genetics story begins not in a lab, but in a house share in the UK between two friends, Mitch and Tim. Mitch was an early adopter of autoflowers and loved their speed and utility. Tim, however, “wasn’t a fan of the quality” and preferred high-grade photoperiod flowers.
This friendly rivalry led to a challenge. As Mitch described it, “the gauntlet was thrown down to develop an Auto that would get Tim sufficiently high!”.
The Commitment
What started as a passion project soon became an obsession. As their breeding programs grew more elaborate, Mitch and Tim realized the restrictive laws in England would never allow them the space and freedom they needed. In 2012, they took a “now or never gamble” and moved to a farm in Spain to dedicate themselves full-time to creating world-class autoflowers from scratch.

Mephisto Genetics started as just two founders and has intentionally grown slow, expanding to a small, tight-knit team of “friends and Meph heads” across five countries. Section 1: Breeding & Philosophy
Q: What is Mephisto’s breeding philosophy? A: Our philosophy is centered on quality, innovation, and proving the true potential of autoflowers. We breed all of our strains “from scratch,” starting with legendary photoperiod genetics and meticulously working them for generations. We focus on stabilizing desirable traits like potency, flavor, and resilience to create auto strains that are stable, consistent, and on par with their photoperiod counterparts.
Q: What is the difference between your ‘Originals’ and ‘Artisanals’ lines? A:
Originals: These are our foundational strains, bred from scratch to be 100% automatic. Strains like 24 Carat, the first project we ever completed, fall into this category.
Artisanals: This line represents our “Creme De La Creme”. For these, we take our high-quality ‘Originals’ and outcross them again with amazing photoperiods. We then work these new genetics for a minimum of four generations until they are fully automatic, stable, and ready to astound.
Section 2: Seed Types Explained
Q: What is the difference between Regular, Feminized, and Autoflower seeds? A:
Regular Seeds: These are 100% natural and produce approximately 50% male and 50% female plants. They are essential for growers who wish to create their own new strains or hunt for unique parent plants.
Feminized Seeds (Photoperiod): These seeds are bred to produce 99.9% female plants. They remove the guesswork for growers focused on flower production. They require a change in the light cycle (to 12/12) to initiate flowering.
Autoflower Seeds (Feminized): This is our specialty. These seeds produce 99.9% female plants that flower based on their age, not a change in the light cycle. This makes them faster and more forgiving for new growers. Our breeding has eliminated the old myths of low potency, with many of our autos testing on par with elite photoperiods.
Section 3: Germination & Growing
Q: What is the recommended germination method? A: We recommend the “paper towel method,” which is a classic for a reason.
Place your seeds between moist (not soaking) paper towels.
Put the towels inside a sealed plastic bag or a DVD case.
Store it in a warm, dark, and stable location (like on top of a grow tent).
Your seeds should sprout a taproot within 24-72 hours.
Q: What is your top advice for growing Mephisto autoflowers? A: Autoflowers flourish under 18 to 24 hours of light daily. For your medium, use a light, well-draining soil (loamy or sandy soils work best) and avoid overwatering. Because autos have a finite life, it’s critical to maximize root growth quickly.
