@meangenefrommendocino is a cannabis breeder from Mendocino, California. MeanGene grew up around cannabis and has bred and grown numerous award-winning varieties. Over the years, he has also raised significant donations and awareness for good causes—and he makes some fire memes, too.
MeanGene’s breeding work is rooted in old heirloom varieties from the Laytonville area, including Black Afi, Red Hindu, Oil Can, Dirt x Purp, Burmese, and Northern Lights lines. These are often combined with more widely recognized clone-only cuts such as Hollywood Pure Kush, Ghost OG, Skywalker, Cherry Pie, and Purple Urkle.
MeanGene is perhaps best known for his work with lime-forward genetics. In 2014, Black Lime Reserve was the talk of the Emerald Cup, and in 2016, he won the Emerald Cup with Cherry Limeade. More recently, he has released Limepop Kush F3, Lime #1 backcrosses, and a number of hybrids built from his Lime and Cherry Limeade lines.
He is also responsible for creating Grape Soda Skunk. @trh_seeds has done notable work with this line, and MeanGene has continued to develop and release new expressions of GSS.
The “soda” or “fizz” characteristic is a defining trait in many of Gene’s lines. These cultivars combine loud terpene profiles with a fizzy, soda-like quality that stands out—especially in Lime crosses, Rootbeer, Grape Soda Skunk, and Nubia.
Gene has released several “worked lines,” including Sky Cuddler Kush F3, SkyJaro F3, and Pina F4. He has explained that his process involves multiple years of growing and testing each line, carefully evaluating different expressions before releasing them to the public.
Rootbeer, in particular, has taken on an almost mythical status. As MeanGene once put it: “You think you can catch Rootbeer? You think a plant like that comes this close to getting caught and sticks its head out? If it comes up for anything, it’ll be to get rid of me. After that… my guess is you’ll never hear from it again.”
