Blueberry IX is the epitome of consistency, providing a uniform phenotype with each plant exhibiting the classic Blueberry characteristics.

We asked Lemon Hoko to share the details about the creation of Blueberry IX, and here’s what he had to say:

“This gem was hatched from seed in 1999 by a friend in Seattle out of a pack of DJ Shorts Blueberry….out of all the females, , I believe it was 8-9 out of this pack, only one was a sativa leaner…and the best, sweetest Blueberry selected out of this pack….she was gifted to me around the year 2000-01… I ran her in the medical market here in Washington and was very popular with the patients in medical scene here in Washington state in the early days of medical days about 2003… I started breeding her and just messing around with some hybrid crosses back then…I wanted to see how her genetics lined up with different cultivars….about 2007-08, I bred her to a strain called White Indica, I believe the seed company was World of Seeds.., I called this cross BerryWhite…I took BerryWhite down to F4 and found the unique Queen I wanted as a rep for this strain/line/cultivar…. I needed a male but at the same time, Ii wanted to create a male that I could breed to both skunky, diesel strains along with sweet fruity strains…so I made a strain called Bwog ET….that was BerryWhite F4 x Fire Alien OG (Ograskal)…I took Bwog ET down to F2 to make sure they were as stable as the F1’s …I used Bwog ET F2 and bred back to BerryWhite F4 to make my first release of BerryWhite BX1 to the world back in 2010…that strain was tested and released to many UK seed banks and made a name for herself…at that time, I wanted to lock Blueberry into seed form, so I crossed a BerryWhite BX1 back to momma Blueberry to make Blueberry BX1 about 2012…I knew momma was very special because of her no ceiling high and her very sweet syrup flavors…every seed batch has been thoroughly tested before release…the Blueberry BX2’s came about 2 years later, and every 2 years after that came another back cross generation… The Blueberry BX2’s were never released…I had some intersex issues with that generation that I wasnt totally pleased with….so with harder testing on my males, I made the Blueberry BX3’s which between the males and especially the females showed a very high ratio of the momma pheno type(sweet blueberry flavors and sativa leaning structure)…I think I was about 80-90% of the desired pheno type in that seed batch….I made straight run of Blueberry BX4, tested and released…..and currently testing the Blueberry BX5’s…. because I was very happy with my Blueberry BX3 generation, I went back to that generation to split the lines…this is where I made the Blueberry IX that is currently on the market…”

    • Flowering Stage: To induce flowering, switch to a 12/12 light cycle (12 hours of light, 12 hours of darkness).
  3. Soil and Growing Medium:
    • Soil: A well-draining soil mix rich in organic matter is ideal. Consider using a mix of compost, perlite, and peat moss to create a nutrient-dense medium.
    • Hydroponics: Blueberry IX can also be grown hydroponically, benefiting from the precise control over nutrient delivery. Ensure the hydroponic system is well-maintained to avoid root issues.
  4. Nutrient Requirements:
    • Vegetative Stage: Use a balanced N-P-K nutrient solution with higher nitrogen content to support vigorous growth.
    • Flowering Stage: Shift to a bloom-specific nutrient solution with higher phosphorus and potassium levels to enhance bud development and resin production. Avoid overfeeding to prevent nutrient burn.
  5. Watering:
    • Frequency: Water the plants when the top inch of soil feels dry. Avoid overwatering, as this can lead to root rot and other issues.
    • pH Levels: To ensure optimal nutrient absorption, maintain the pH of the soil or nutrient solution between 6.0 and 6.5.

Growth Characteristics

  1. Plant Structure:
    • Blueberry IX typically exhibits a bushy and compact structure with strong lateral branching. This growth pattern makes it suitable for various training techniques to maximize yield.
  2. Training Techniques:
    • Topping: Pruning the main stem to encourage bushier growth and more bud sites.
    • Low-Stress Training (LST): Bending and tying down branches to create an even canopy and increase light penetration.
    • Screen of Green (ScrOG): Using a screen to spread out the branches horizontally, maximizing light exposure and bud production.
  3. Flowering Time:
    • Blueberry IX has a moderate flowering time, typically ranging from 8-10 weeks. Indoor growers can expect to harvest around the 9-week mark, while outdoor growers should aim to harvest in late September to early October, depending on the local climate.
  4. Yield:
    • Indoor Yield: Blueberry IX can produce 400-500 grams per square meter under optimal conditions.
    • Outdoor Yield: Outdoor plants can yield 500-700 grams per plant, depending on the environment and care provided.

    • Indoor plants typically reach a height of 3-4 feet (90-120 cm), making them manageable for most indoor setups.
    • Outdoor plants can grow taller, reaching heights of 5-6 feet (150-180 cm) or more, depending on the growing season and conditions.

Pest and Disease Management

  1. Pest Prevention:
    • Regularly inspect plants for signs of pests such as spider mites, aphids, and whiteflies. Use organic insecticides or beneficial insects to control infestations.
    • Maintain proper air circulation and humidity levels to prevent mold and mildew.
  2. Disease Prevention:
    • Ensure good air circulation around the plants to reduce the risk of fungal infections.
    • Avoid overwatering and ensure proper drainage to prevent root rot.

Harvesting and Curing

  1. Harvest Timing:
    • Monitor trichome development using a magnifying glass or microscope. Harvest when the trichomes are mostly milky with some turning amber for a balance of potency and flavor.
  2. Harvesting:
    • Cut the plants at the base and trim away large fan leaves. Hang the branches upside down in a dark, well-ventilated area with temperatures around 60-70°F (15-21°C) and humidity levels of 50-60%.
  3. Curing:
    • After 7-10 days of drying, trim the buds and place them in airtight jars. Store the jars in a cool, dark place, opening them daily for the first week to allow excess moisture to escape. Continue curing for at least 2-4 weeks to develop the full aroma and flavor profile.

Stabilization of the Blueberry IX Strain

Introduction to Stabilization

Stabilization in cannabis breeding refers to the process of refining a strain through successive generations to ensure that the offspring consistently express the desired traits. This involves selecting parent plants that exhibit the most favorable characteristics and breeding them over multiple generations to achieve genetic uniformity. Lemon Hoko’s Blueberry IX is a prime example of this meticulous process, resulting in a strain that reliably delivers high-quality, consistent results.

The Blueberry Strain

The original Blueberry strain, created by DJ Short, is renowned for its sweet, fruity aroma and potent effects. However, like many classic strains, it can exhibit genetic variability, leading to differences in plant structure, yield, and cannabinoid profile. Lemon Hoko’s goal with the Blueberry IX strain was to stabilize these traits, ensuring that each plant from the seeds would consistently express the hallmark features of the Blueberry lineage.

Stabilization Process

  1. Selection of Parent Plants:
    • Initial Selection: Lemon Hoko began by selecting the best specimens from the original Blueberry strain. These plants were chosen based on their desirable traits such as aroma, flavor, potency, growth structure, and resistance to pests and diseases.
    • Phenotype Assessment: Each selected plant underwent a rigorous assessment to ensure it possessed the desired characteristics. Only those that met the strict criteria were chosen as parent plants for further breeding.
  2. Inbreeding and Backcrossing:
    • Inbreeding: The initial parent plants were bred together to create the first generation of Blueberry IX. This process involved crossing male and female plants that displayed the desired traits.
    • Backcrossing: To reinforce these traits and reduce genetic variability, Lemon Hoko employed backcrossing. This involves crossing the offspring back with one of the original parent plants. This step helps to fix the desirable traits in the genetic pool, making them more prominent in subsequent generations.
  3. Selection and Testing:
    • Generational Selection: Over several generations, Lemon Hoko continued to select and breed plants that consistently exhibited the desired Blueberry traits. Each generation was carefully evaluated, and only the best individuals were used for further breeding.
    • Field Testing: The selected plants were grown and tested in various environments to ensure they performed consistently under different conditions. This included both indoor and outdoor settings, with assessments on growth patterns, yield, and overall plant health.
  4. Genetic Stabilization:
    • Homozygosity: The goal of the stabilization process is to achieve a high degree of homozygosity, where the plants have uniform genetic expressions. This means that the offspring will reliably exhibit the same traits, reducing variability and ensuring consistency in each crop.
    • Trait Fixation: By repeatedly selecting and breeding plants with the desired characteristics, Lemon Hoko was able to fix these traits in the Blueberry IX genetic line. This results in seeds that produce plants with uniform growth, flavor, aroma, and potency.

Results of Stabilization

  1. Consistent Aroma and Flavor:
    • Blueberry IX plants consistently exhibit the rich, sweet, fruity aroma that is characteristic of the Blueberry strain. The flavor profile mirrors the aroma, providing a delightful sensory experience with every use.
  2. Uniform Growth Patterns:
    • The stabilization process ensures that Blueberry IX plants have similar growth characteristics, including height, structure, and flowering time. This uniformity makes it easier for growers to manage their crops and predict harvest times.
  3. Reliable Potency and Effects:
    • Blueberry IX delivers consistent potency and a balanced profile of cannabinoids and terpenes. Users can expect reliable effects, whether for recreational enjoyment or medicinal purposes.
  4. Enhanced Resistance:
    • Through careful selection, Lemon Hoko has also enhanced the strain’s resistance to common pests and diseases. This makes Blueberry IX a robust and resilient strain that performs well in a variety of growing conditions.
