In a move that sets them apart, the two founders are the only ones who handle the genetics throughout the entire process—from cultivation and pollination to seed harvesting and packaging.

This meticulous dedication to quality control and next-level breeding has shattered old myths about autoflower potency. It has also cultivated one of the industry’s most loyal communities—the “Meph Heads” —and earned the brand numerous accolades, including “Best Breeder” at both the American and World Autoflower Cups.

The “Gauntlet”
The Mephisto Genetics story begins not in a lab, but in a shared house in the UK between two friends, Mitch and Tim. Mitch was an early adopter of autoflowers and appreciated their speed and utility. Tim, however, “wasn’t a fan of the quality” and preferred high-grade photoperiod flowers.

This friendly rivalry led to a challenge. As Mitch described it, “the gauntlet was thrown down to develop an auto that would get Tim sufficiently high!”

The Commitment
What started as a passion project quickly became an obsession. As their breeding programs grew more ambitious, Mitch and Tim realized that restrictive laws in England would never allow them the space and freedom they needed. In 2012, they took a “now or never gamble” and moved to a farm in Spain to dedicate themselves full-time to creating world-class autoflowers from scratch.

The “Meph Heads”
Mephisto Genetics began with just two founders and has intentionally grown slowly, expanding into a small, tight-knit team of “friends and Meph heads” across five countries. This is not a faceless corporation—it’s a family built on trust and a shared passion for the plant. That community-driven, hands-on approach remains at the core of the Mephisto brand.

Q: What is Mephisto’s breeding philosophy?
A: Our philosophy centers on quality, innovation, and proving the true potential of autoflowers. We breed all of our strains “from scratch,” starting with legendary photoperiod genetics and meticulously working them through multiple generations. Our focus is on stabilizing desirable traits such as potency, flavor, and resilience, resulting in autoflower strains that are stable, consistent, and comparable to their photoperiod counterparts.

Q: What is the difference between your “Originals” and “Artisanals” lines?
A:

Originals:
These are our foundational strains, bred from scratch to be 100% autoflowering. Strains like 24 Carat, the first project we completed, fall into this category.

Artisanals:
This line represents our “crème de la crème.” We take our high-quality Originals and outcross them with exceptional photoperiod strains. These new genetics are then worked for a minimum of four generations until they are fully autoflowering, stable, and ready for release.

Section 2: Seed Types Explained

Q: What is the difference between regular, feminized, and autoflower seeds?
A:

Regular Seeds:
These are 100% natural and produce approximately 50% male and 50% female plants. They are essential for growers who want to create new strains or hunt for unique parent plants.

Feminized Seeds (Photoperiod):
These seeds are bred to produce 99.9% female plants, eliminating the need to identify and remove males. They are ideal for growers focused on flower production and require a change in the light cycle (to 12/12) to initiate flowering.

Autoflower Seeds (Feminized):
This is our specialty. These seeds produce 99.9% female plants that flower in response to age rather than changes in the light cycle. This makes them faster and more forgiving for new growers. Our breeding has eliminated the outdated perception of low potency, with many of our autoflowers performing on par with elite photoperiod strains.

Section 3: Germination and Growing

Q: What is the recommended germination method?
A: We recommend the “paper towel method,” a proven and reliable approach:

• Place seeds between moist (not soaking) paper towels
• Put the towels inside a sealed plastic bag or a DVD case
• Store in a warm, dark, and stable location (such as on top of a grow tent)
• Seeds should develop a taproot within 24–72 hours

Q: What is your top advice for growing Mephisto autoflowers?
A: Autoflowers thrive under 18 to 24 hours of light per day. Use a light, well-draining medium—loamy or sandy soils work best—and avoid overwatering. Because autoflowers have a finite life cycle, maximizing early root development is critical for achieving optimal growth and yield.
