After sixteen years running seed and gardens, I’ll tell you straight: temperature is the lever that quietly decides your yield, your terpene profile, and how many problems you fight all season. Nail it and the plant does what genetics promised. Miss it and you’re chasing heat stress, bleaching, mold, and slow growth all run long. The best temperature for cannabis isn’t one number — it shifts with the stage, and it works hand-in-hand with humidity through something called VPD. Here are the ranges I actually run, why they matter, and how to hold them.

Why Temperature Runs the Whole Show

Cannabis is a C3 plant with a real comfort band. Inside it, photosynthesis, transpiration, and nutrient uptake all hum. Push outside it and everything downstream suffers:

  • Photosynthesis efficiency drops off a cliff past ~85°F without CO2.
  • Transpiration and water uptake swing with temp — too hot and the plant burns water and calcium trying to cool itself; too cold and it can’t drink or feed.
  • Nutrient absorption slows in cold root zones, so you get “deficiencies” that are really temperature problems.
  • Terpenes are volatile. Heat literally evaporates the light aromatics you grow for, especially in late flower.
  • Pest and pathogen pressure rides on your climate — hot and dry invites mites, cold and damp invites mold and bud rot.

Get the temperature right and most of your other “problems” never show up.

Best Temperature for Cannabis by Stage

These are air temps at canopy height. Lights-on (day) and lights-off (night) both matter — the swing between them is a tool, not an afterthought.

Seedlings & Clones

  • Day: 72–78°F. Night: 68–72°F.
  • Higher humidity, 65–70% RH, VPD low around 0.6–0.8 kPa.

Vegetative

  • Day: 72–82°F. Night: 65–72°F.
  • RH 55–65%, VPD roughly 0.8–1.1 kPa.
  • This is the growth engine. Warm days drive vigorous stacking. You can push toward 85°F only if you’re running supplemental CO2 above ~1200 ppm in a sealed room — the extra CO2 lets the plant use the extra heat. No CO2? Don’t chase 85°F; you’ll just stress it.

Early Flower

  • Day: 70–80°F. Night: 62–70°F.
  • RH 45–55%, VPD 1.0–1.3 kPa.
  • Hold the day under 80°F. The flip is when heat starts costing you density and inviting hermie flowers on shakier genetics.

Late Flower (Last 2–3 Weeks)

  • Day: 65–75°F. Night: 58–65°F.
  • RH 40–45%, VPD 1.2–1.5 kPa.
  • This is where you buy bag appeal. Cooler nights with a solid day-night drop bring out purples and blues in genetics that carry the anthocyanins, and — more importantly — they preserve terpenes and firm up the flower. Lower humidity keeps rot out of dense buds in the home stretch.

The Two Rules That Beat Any Single Number

1. Keep the day-to-night swing around 10°F. A gentle drop at night is how nature does it and it’s what the plant expects. Warmer nights kill your stretch and flatten terpene production; too big a swing (20°F+) stresses the plant and can trigger problems of its own. Ten degrees is the sweet spot. Late in flower, letting nights run a touch cooler is where color and aroma come from.

2. Treat sustained air over 85°F as a hard ceiling without CO2. Past 85°F photosynthesis efficiency falls, past 90°F you’re accumulating real heat damage — tacoing leaves, foxtailing, airy buds, terpenes cooking off. If you can’t hold under 85°F with lights on, run your lights at night when ambient temps drop, or add cooling. Don’t just tough it out.

Temperature and Humidity: VPD in Plain English

You can’t talk temperature without humidity, because the two together decide how hard your plant transpires. VPD (vapor pressure deficit) is just the combined read — how “thirsty” the air is for moisture, measured in kilopascals.

  • Too low VPD (warm and very humid): the plant barely transpires, growth slows, and you’re begging for mold.
  • Too high VPD (warm and very dry): the plant transpires like crazy, burns water and calcium, and you get heat-stress-looking symptoms even at a reasonable temperature.

Working targets by stage:
Seedlings/clones: 0.6–0.8 kPa
Veg: 0.8–1.1 kPa
Flower: 1.0–1.5 kPa, drifting toward the high end late

The practical takeaway: as temperature climbs, keep humidity up to hold VPD sane, and you give yourself a real cushion against heat stress. An 84°F room at 60% RH can be perfectly fine; the same 84°F at 25% RH is tacoing leaves. Temperature and humidity are one system — manage them as one.

Root-Zone Temperature: The One Most People Ignore

Your medium temp matters as much as your air temp, and it’s usually the blind spot. Target 65–72°F in the root zone. Cold roots (below ~60°F) shut down nutrient uptake and cause pale, stunted plants that look like a feeding problem but aren’t. Hot roots (above ~75°F, easy to hit in black pots on concrete or in a warm reservoir) invite root rot and pythium in hydro, and cook the roots in soil. A cold concrete floor under fabric pots in winter will drag your root zone 10°F below your air temp — get pots up on a shelf or a mat. In summer outdoors, shade the pots and use bigger containers with more thermal mass.

Indoor vs. Outdoor

Indoors you own the dials — exhaust, AC, heater, humidifier/dehumidifier, and lights-at-night to dodge daytime heat. Put a thermo-hygrometer probe at canopy height (not on the floor) and manage to that. Size your exhaust to turn over the room’s air every couple of minutes.

Outdoors you manage the season, not the thermostat. In a hot region, 30–40% shade cloth on 95°F+ days keeps plants in the productive band, mulch and bigger pots protect the root zone, and watering in the cool of morning or evening beats midday. In a cold or short-season spot, pick fast, resilient genetics and get plants in early. Reading Heat and Cold Stress Fast

Too hot: leaves taco/canoe upward, edges curl crispy, plant wilts even in wet medium, foxtailing and airy buds in flower. Confirm with a thermometer at canopy height. Too cold: growth stalls, leaves can purple from cold rather than genetics, nutrient uptake slows into fake-looking deficiencies, and below ~60°F night temps you risk slow, uneven bloom. A little cold in late flower boosts color; a lot of cold all season just costs you weight.

CO2, Light, and the Tools to Hold It Steady

Two things bend these numbers. First, supplemental CO2: sealed rooms running above ~1200 ppm let plants use higher temps — 82–86°F — because the extra carbon fuels the faster photosynthesis heat allows. Without CO2, that ceiling doesn’t exist; you’re just cooking the plant. Second, light intensity and heat travel together — a close, strong fixture is a heat source, so your temperature target and your hang distance are the same conversation.

And you can’t hold what you can’t see. Buy a decent thermo-hygrometer with a probe you place at canopy height, and ideally one that logs min/max so you catch the 3 p.m. peak and the 4 a.m. low you’re not awake for. A cheap min/max logger has saved more crops than any nutrient I’ve ever run. Manage to the numbers, not to how the room feels when you happen to walk in.

Drying and Curing Temperatures

The grow isn’t over at the chop. Dry at 60–68°F and 55–62% RH for 7–14 days, slow and in the dark. Too warm or too dry and you flash off terpenes and get a harsh, hay-smelling smoke; too cold and damp and you invite mold on the line. Then cure in jars, burping daily at first, holding around 60–62% RH. Every degree of heat and every point of humidity you mismanage here quietly erodes the terpenes you spent all season protecting.

What’s the single best temperature for growing cannabis?

Do I really need to track VPD, or is temperature enough?
