The Runtz Family Tree: Every Runtz Strain Worth Growing

Here’s the honest truth about the Runtz family in 2026: there are too many of them, half of them are marketing, and the other half are genuinely some of the best craft genetics you can drop in a pot.

My job is to tell you which is which.

I’m James Bean—founder of Seeds Here Now, more than 15 years in the seed game, Oaksterdam-educated, 3,more than 500 strains in our catalog, and I’ve personally judged at enough cannabis competitions to know the difference between a strain that wins on merit and one that wins because it has a good name. The Runtz family has both kinds.

Let’s run the tree.

Where Runtz Came From

In 2017, Ray Bama of the Cookies Fam crossed indoor-grown Zkittlez with Gelato in Southern California. The result: a strain with Gelato’s creamy potency and dense structure, Zkittlez’s explosive candy-fruit terp profile, and a perfectly balanced 50/50 hybrid effect. It won Leafly’s Strain of the Year in 2020. Songs got written about it. A whole candy-colored lineage exploded outward from that original cross.

The base genetics you need to understand:

  • Zkittlez—Indica-dominant, descended from Grape Ape and Grapefruit lines. The source of the candy-rainbow terp character in every Runtz cross.
  • Gelato—Sunset Sherbet × Thin Mint GSC hybrid. Creamy, dense, potent. The backbone.
  • Runtz—The 50/50 result. Sweet, fruity, euphoric, and relaxing. Trichome-covered, dense nugs that photograph like a dream.

Everything on this list flows from that foundation. Some of these are direct phenotypes of the original cross. Some are new crosses using Runtz as a parent. I’ll tell you which is which.

The Runtz Strains Worth Growing in 2026

1. King Runtz

Lineage: Rock-N-Runtz × Bellagio Gelato

Breeder: First Principles Genetics

Type: Indica-dominant (70/30)

THC: Up to more than 29%

Effects: Deep relaxation, euphoric body stone, long-lasting sedation

Terps: Garlic-candy-Z kush mashup—gassy, sweet, Runtz-forward

Flower time: 56 to 63 days

Yield: Heavy (500 to 600 g/m² indoor)

King Runtz is where the Runtz name starts getting rebuilt from the ground up with new genetics. First Principles Genetics took Rock-N-Runtz (itself already a Runtz cross) and crossed it with Bellagio Gelato to create something decidedly regal—tall, long-bodied plants with strong lateral branches, heavy indica stone, and a terp profile that has no business being as good as it is. The garlic-and-candy combo sounds wrong until you actually smell it.

Heavy LST or HST recommended for that wild plant structure. Yields reward the work.

2. Super Runtz

Lineage: Super Lemon Cherry Gelato × Runtz

Type: 50/50 hybrid (can lean either way by pheno)

THC: more than 30%

Effects: Strong euphoria, creative energy, smooth relaxation

Terps: Grapes, fruit, gassy undertones

Super Runtz takes the original Runtz genetics and elevates the potency ceiling substantially—this is one of the strongest strains in the family, regularly testing over 30% in choice phenos. The Super Lemon Cherry Gelato cross adds complexity to the flavor while keeping that recognizable Runtz candy foundation intact.

It’s a rare find in seed form. When it’s available, don’t sleep on it. The effects have a clean quality to them—euphoric without being chaotic, which matters once you get into the more than 30% territory where some strains become genuinely uncomfortable.

Purple Runtz buds

3. Purple Runtz

Lineage: Gelato #33 × Zkittlez (phenotype selection)

Type: Balanced hybrid

THC: ~22% to 26%

Effects: Euphoric, uplifting, calming body effect

Terps: Berries, grapes, floral sweetness, tropical

Flower time: 8 to 10 weeks

Purple Runtz is a direct phenotype of the original Runtz cross—same Gelato #33 × Zkittlez parents, selected specifically for deep anthocyanin expression and a more prominent grape-and-berry terpene profile. The Runtz Crew reportedly developed this in California around 2017 alongside the original.

The visual is what sells it first: dense, deep purple buds covered in trichomes. The smoke delivers that classic euphoric Runtz energy—uplifting and social, with a calming body undertone that keeps things functional. Purple Runtz has consistently ranked among the top 10 most-searched Runtz variants on SeedsHereNow.com, pulling over 6,400 impressions in our Search Console data.

4. Black Cherry Runtz

Lineage: Black Cherry Pie × Pink Runtz

Type: Balanced hybrid (50/50)

THC: ~25%

Effects: Calming body high, euphoric dreamy headspace

Terps: Zesty citrus, ripe cherry, floral, fruity

Flower time: 8 to 10 weeks

Yield: Up to 500 g/m² indoor, 600 g/plant outdoor

The lineage debate on Black Cherry Runtz is real—some sources claim it’s a direct Zkittlez × Gelato selection, others trace it to Black Cherry Pie × Pink Runtz. Our strain review at Seeds Here Now documents the Black Cherry Pie × Pink Runtz lineage, and based on the flavor profile, that checks out. The dark cherry notes are far more pronounced than you’d get from straight Runtz genetics.

25% THC with a body-heavy, dreamy effect profile. Great for winding down. Dense, colorful buds with a rich cherry-pie aroma that translates directly into the smoke. Over 5,300 monthly impressions for this strain in our data—it has an audience.

5. Ferrari Runtz

Lineage: Ferrari OG × Runtz

Type: Balanced hybrid (~50/50)

THC: 19% to 29%

Effects: Euphoric head rush, creative energy, gradual body relaxation

Terps: Piney lemon, creamy exhale

Flower time: 8 to 9 weeks

Yield: ~400 g/m² indoor

Ferrari Runtz is interesting because it breaks the candy-fruit flavor template that most Runtz crosses follow. Ferrari OG brings a prominent piney-lemon terpene character that stands out against the sweetness of Runtz—you get a piney lemon nose on the jar, creamy and pine on the smoke, and a well-balanced hybrid high that works morning through evening.

It’s not the loudest strain at the party, but it’s one of the most versatile. Creative and focused when you need it, relaxing without being sedating. Small pebble-like nugs with that frosty white-and-purple visual that the Runtz family does so well.

6. Venom Runtz

Lineage: Venom OG × Runtz

Type: Indica-dominant (70/30)

THC: ~27%

Effects: Fast, hard-hitting, full-body calm, made for nighttime

Terps: Fruity candy, Kush gas, earthy sweetness

Flower time: 8 to 9 weeks

Don’t let the candy terps fool you. Venom Runtz is a knockout. At 27% THC with strong indica dominance, it hits fast and hits hard—Venom OG’s heavyweight relaxation combined with Runtz’s fruit-sweet flavor makes this strain feel like dessert that then sends you to sleep. The buds are dense, purple-flecked, and dripping in resin.

This is strictly an evening strain. If you’re looking for something to handle serious stress, insomnia, or pain, Venom Runtz belongs in the conversation. Compact and bushy growth—ideal for smaller indoor tents.

7. Grape Runtz

Lineage: Zkittlez × Gelato × Grape Ape × OG Kush

Type: Balanced hybrid

THC: ~20% to 25%

Effects: Relaxing, euphoric, functional body high

Terps: Grape, sweet, fruity, earthy OG undertones

Grape Runtz extends the Runtz family tree by bringing Grape Ape and OG Kush into the equation—you get the Zkittlez-and-Gelato candy foundation with a more pronounced grape character and that earthy-woody OG Kush depth underneath. It’s a fuller, more complex flavor than straight Runtz and the effects lean gently indica without being heavy.

This one consistently pulls over 5,200 monthly impressions in our Search Console data. Growers love the yield structure—dense, trichome-covered buds and a plant that responds well to training.

8. Guava Runtz

Lineage: Guava × Runtz (Cookies Fam)

Type: Balanced hybrid

THC: ~20% to 25%

Effects: Euphoria, relaxation, creativity—versatile all-day profile

Terps: Tropical guava, sweet candy, earthy undertone

Flower time: ~8 to 9 weeks

Yield: 400 to 500 g/m² indoor, up to 600 g/plant outdoor

Guava Runtz is one of the Cookies Fam productions—Guava crossed directly into Runtz. The tropical guava character is real and distinct. On the inhale you get that fresh fruit smoothie sweetness; the Runtz candy foundation catches on the exhale. It’s a creative, social strain that doesn’t bulldoze you—perfect for the kind of afternoon where you want your brain turned on but your shoulders turned off.

Resilient against pests and disease. Relatively easy cultivation. Good for intermediate growers.

Lemon Cherry Runtz plant

9. Lemon Cherry Runtz

Lineage: Runtz × Lemon Tree (some cuts listed as Sunset Sherbet × Runtz)

Type: Balanced hybrid (50/50)

THC: 19% to more than 25%

Effects: Cerebral euphoria, happiness, calm body

Terps: Lemon, cherry, sweet citrus, lavender (limonene-forward)

Flower time: 7 to 9 weeks

The lineage on Lemon Cherry Runtz has some variation across sources—some document Runtz × Lemon Tree, others list Sunset Sherbet × Runtz. Either way, the strain expression is consistent: limonene-heavy, bright citrus and cherry terps, uplifting and euphoric without being overwhelming.

This is one of the more crowd-pleasing Runtz variants for newer cannabis consumers—the citrus brightness is approachable, the effects are clean, and the 7 to 9 week flower time makes it practical. We carry the Dr. Blaze Lemon Cherry Runtz in our catalog—feminized seeds available at SeedsHereNow.com with a germination guarantee.

This strain pulls nearly 5,000 monthly impressions in our data. It’s not a sleeper—people are actively searching for it.

10. Jet Fuel Runtz

Lineage: Jet Fuel (Jet Fuel Gelato variant) × Runtz

Type: Sativa-leaning hybrid

THC: ~20% to more than 30% (pheno-dependent)

Effects: Cerebral spark, focus, creative energy—balanced but sativa-leaning

Terps: Sweet candy-fruit, diesel and gas, earthy depth

Flower time: ~8 to 9 weeks

If the Runtz family were a band, Jet Fuel Runtz would be the guitarist who studied jazz. The Jet Fuel genetics bring a diesel-and-gas terpene backbone into the Runtz sweetness, and the result is a strain that genuinely surprised me the first time I ran it. The candy-fruit hits up front, the diesel takes over on the exhale, and the high leans cerebral and focused in a way most Runtz crosses don’t.

Good phenos are consistently over 25% THC. Dense nugs with purple undertones and strong resin production. I’ve seen growers run this specifically for the terpene contrast—it’s one of the more unique flavor profiles in the family.

11. Blackberry Runtz (aka Blackberry Runtz Cake)

Lineage: Runtz Cake × Blackberry Kush

Type: Indica-dominant

THC: 22% to 28%

Effects: Euphoric start, heavy relaxation, couch-lock territory

Terps: Berry candy, cream, Kush gas, dark fruit

Flower time: 8 to 9 weeks

Yield: 450 to 550 g/m² indoor

Blackberry Runtz leans hard into the indica side of the family. Runtz Cake adds frost and sweetness; Blackberry Kush adds dark berry funk and knockout body effects. The result is a strain that starts euphoric and then gradually convinces you to cancel your evening plans.

Buds run purple to near-black with neon orange pistils—visually one of the most striking in the Runtz catalog. Hash makers take note: the resin is oily and the berry terps survive pressing well. We don’t always have this one in stock, but check the catalog—when it’s there, it moves fast.

12. Midnight Runtz

Lineage: Funky Charms × Runtz

Type: Hybrid

THC: ~20% to 25%

Effects: Relaxing and uplifting, euphoric, versatile

Terps: Berries, grape, tropical fruit, pine, candy

Midnight Runtz is one of the more offbeat crosses in the family—Funky Charms is not a common parent in the Runtz world, and that’s exactly what makes this strain stand out. The terp profile is complex: you get the expected candy and berry notes from the Runtz side, but the Funky Charms genetics add pine and spice that give the exhale real character.

Dense, colorful buds—deep purple, vibrant green, fiery orange. The high is balanced and versatile without being particularly extreme in either direction. A good everyday strain in the Runtz family that doesn’t require warning labels.

13. Strawberry Runtz

Lineage: Runtz × Strawnana (Purple City Genetics)

Type: Balanced hybrid

THC: ~20% to more than 25%

Effects: Relaxing, euphoric, functional—daytime or evening

Terps: Sweet strawberry, tropical fruit, candy, banana undertones

The Strawnana parent (Strawberry Banana, from Crockett Family Farms) brings banana and tropical strawberry terps to the Runtz candy base, and the result is exactly as delicious as it sounds. Purple City Genetics bred this one with intentionality—it’s not a lazy “Runtz plus anything” cross. The flavor is coherent and memorable.

One of the more approachable Runtz variants for new growers: forgiving structure, good yield, and a visual that delivers purple, orange, and green all in one nug. The effects are balanced enough to work any time of day.

One thing I’ve been saying on The Dude Grows Show for years: the quality of genetics matters way more than the brand on the label. The Runtz name is everywhere in 2026—dispensaries, seed banks, Instagram—and not all of it traces back to verified lineage. When you buy from Seeds Here Now, you’re buying from a team that has spent more than 15 years vetting breeders, maintaining relationships, and refusing to put hype genetics in front of the real ones. Our full Runtz review catalog covers the OG and expands from there.

The catalog doesn’t lie. The terps don’t lie. Buy verified genetics and let the plants do the talking.
