5.1 — Structure and Morphology

  • Internode spacing: Tight internodes mean more bud sites packed into less vertical space. Generally preferred for dense, high-yielding plants.
  • Branching pattern: Does the plant branch heavily on its own? A naturally branching plant fills space well without as much training.
  • Stem strength: Can stems hold up heavy buds without stakes? Strong stems mean less labor and less risk of snapping at scale.
  • Height and stretch: How much does the plant stretch when you flip to 12/12? Some phenos can triple in height during the first three weeks of flower.

How To Choose a Keeper Pheno

After all the data is in — how to make the call

The Scorecard Approach

Add up your scores from the master checklist. The plant with the highest total score is your statistical winner. But look at the pattern of scores. Weight your traits according to your goals — if you are a hash maker, the washability and trichome sections should count double. If you are a home grower, aroma and effect are your top criteria.

The Blind Nose Test

After curing for at least 2–3 weeks, do a blind nose test. Put samples from your top three finalists in identical opaque jars. Have someone else shuffle them. Smell each one without knowing which plant it is and rank them. This removes bias from your visual memory of the plants during the grow and gives you the most honest terpene evaluation.

Trust Your Gut — But Check It Twice

There is usually one plant that you keep coming back to. You find yourself checking it more than the others. You get excited when you smell it. Trust that instinct — it is often right. But check it against your data before committing. Data and instinct together are stronger than either alone.

Preserve Your Keeper

Once you have identified your winner, make multiple clones — at least 4–6. Keep them in small pots in veg under 18/6 lighting. Label every single clone clearly with strain, pheno number, and date cloned. Consider sending a clone to a trusted fellow grower as a backup. Your keeper represents potentially years of future production — protect it.

Multi-Generational Hunting

Once you have found a keeper pheno, take your keeper and cross it with another elite to create a new round of seeds. Pop those seeds and hunt again. Over several generations, you can progressively select toward a very specific ideal plant. This is how commercially elite strains are created.

Reverse Runs

After selecting a keeper, specifically look for any traits your keeper is missing. If your keeper is exceptional for hash but has only average bag appeal, hunt for a pollen donor exceptional for bag appeal. Cross the two and see if you can combine both strengths in the next generation.

Environmental Stress Testing

Before finalizing a keeper for commercial production, stress test it. Deliberately push it slightly outside ideal conditions. A pheno that handles stress gracefully is far more valuable in a real-world commercial setting than one that only performs under perfect conditions.

Phenotype (Pheno)
The physical and chemical expression of a plant’s genetics in a given environment. Two plants with the same DNA can look different based on conditions.
Genotype
The actual genetic code — the DNA blueprint. Two plants can share a genotype but express differently (different phenotype) based on environment.
F1 (First Filial)
First generation cross between two distinct parent lines. Maximum genetic variability — the most exciting and unpredictable seeds to hunt.
F2 / F3 / F4…
Subsequent generations created by crossing F1 plants together. Each generation tends toward more stability but loses some F1 hybrid vigor.
IBL (Inbred Line)
A highly stabilized line created through many generations of self-pollination or sibling crosses. Very uniform, consistent, but less variable for hunting.
Keeper / Keeper Clone
The selected phenotype from a hunt that you choose to preserve as a mother plant for ongoing clonal propagation.
Mother Plant
A vegetative plant kept specifically to provide clones. Never flowered. Maintained in 18/6 or 20/4 light cycle.
Pheno Hunt
The process of growing multiple seeds from the same batch, comparing individuals, and selecting the best for keeping.
Pop Seeds / Popping
Germinating seeds. “Popping a pack” means germinating a full seed pack.
Calyx
The small, teardrop-shaped structure at the base of each pistil that swells into the bud. High calyx count = high-yielding, dense structure.
Pistil
The white hairs on female flowers that catch pollen. Color change from white to orange/red signals maturity.
Terpenes

Trichomes
